Meet Johnna Stein
Johnna loves reading, writing, kids, and dogs, and she especially likes rooting for and writing about underdogs. She also adores coffee, movies, and playing games.
Johnna is an award-winning writer and you will find her stories in Cricket, Kiki, Brio and Guide magazines. She and her Dutch husband, Frank, have cared for more than 30 “bonus kids,” aged newborn to 19, who have lived in their home for anywhere from 24 hours to 2.5 years. They always try to have a bed available for someone who needs a soft place to land.
Johnna serves as the VP of Creative Resources with Promise686, helping to create resources to serve vulnerable children and families, and wholeheartedly believes all kids deserve safe, strong, and well-supported families.
Books & Movies
My favorite as a kid was the Boxcar Children series. Who knew I’d grow up to work in foster care? My favorite movie is Ever After. My daughter and I pretty much have it memorized.
Boxers
I love all dogs! But, I LOVE boxers because they’re so playful, snuggly, and silly.
Food
Even though I have to eat gluten free, dairy and egg-free, I love all kinds of food and trying new restaurants. My favorite is Thai.
Languages
I speak fluent Dutch because I lived in Holland (The Netherlands) for ten years. I used to speak fluent French, but now I mostly understand it. My Spanish is good enough to be dangerous!
Tour Guide
I used to be a tour guide, taking international tourists on a Greyhound bus to all the cool cities and national parks in the USA. I rafted wild rapids, hovered over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter, walked on a glacier, cheered at rodeos, floated in a hot air balloon, and told a lot of tall tales.
